Green and Roughside bothies
In March 2019 we decided to visit a bothy fairly local to us, Green bothy in Northumberland. As we had both been feeling a bit sub-par we opted to forgo the cross-border ride along the old borders railway and instead drive to Falstone and park before heading off on the bikes. I plotted a route along the bridleway from Stannersburn, but we found it was not rideable and was pretty hard going in wet conditions.
It’s a nice bothy with three sleeping rooms and an indoor woodshed. We had to clear out some fresh eggs, milk and a lot of packet carbs there to keep the mice at bay, but it was otherwise in good nick.
Our planned circular route home didn’t quite go to plan – they really don’t want you taking your bike on this footpath…
Though some parts of the route were actually rideable.
We stopped off at Roughside bothy for a quick look around. I had heard a lot of negative stories about this bothy but by the look of it, it’s troubled days may be behind it. It looked lovely, so we will definitely be back to spend the night there sometime.
The ride back from Roughside was fairly easy and uneventful. A great little trip to recharge our batteries.
